What to check on a
used Rational?
A used Rational can be an excellent purchase — if you know what to look for. This checklist runs through the points that make the difference between a reliable unit and an expensive surprise.

In short
Assess a used Rational on operating hours, the condition of the steam generator and sensors, and who carried out the refurbishment — not on age alone. The safest option is a unit that has been inspected, tested and repaired by an authorised dealer with its own workshop.
The checklist, point by point
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Operating hours | Ask for the read-out operating hours. Always assess them together with the maintenance history. |
| Year and model | Newer means longer availability of parts and software. iCombi or the earlier SelfCookingCenter. |
| Steam generator | The heart of the unit. Limescale build-up and wear here are expensive; have the condition confirmed. |
| Sensors / core temperature probe | Determine cooking accuracy. Must be tested and accurate. |
| Cleaning system | Test whether the automatic cleaning programme works; this is used daily. |
| Door seal | Intact, supple seal. Leakage costs energy and cooking quality. |
| Error messages on start-up | Start the unit and run a programme; watch for messages. |
| Refurbishment and origin | Inspected by whom? An authorised dealer with its own technicians offers the most certainty. |
Red flags with an anonymous purchase
With a unit from an unknown seller or marketplace, the information you need is often missing: no read-out operating hours, no refurbishment report, no opportunity to see the unit working, and no point of contact for service afterwards. A low price does not outweigh a unit that fails shortly after purchase with no one responsible.
So buy from a party that can demonstrate the condition and provides service afterwards. Also read the broader guide to buying a used Rational.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most important thing to check on a used Rational?
The condition of the steam generator, the number of operating hours and who carried out the refurbishment. Together these say more about reliability than the year of manufacture. A unit inspected and tested by an authorised dealer offers the most certainty.
How many operating hours is a lot for a Rational?
There is no hard limit; a Rational is built for years of intensive use. Operating hours are mainly relevant in combination with maintenance: a high number of hours with a good maintenance history can be perfectly fine, while few hours without maintenance can still cause problems. Always ask for the read-out operating hours.
Can I assess a used Rational myself?
You can see a lot yourself: clean housing, intact door seal, working cleaning system, no error messages on start-up. The technical core — steam generator, sensors, software — is better assessed by a skilled technician.
What does JMGT do with a used Rational before selling it?
Every used unit is inspected, tested and where necessary repaired by our own technicians. The conditions that apply to a specific unit are set out in the quote or product description. Contact us for the details of the unit you have in mind.
