Rational iCombi Pro vs. competitors:
Why Rational wins

Convotherm, Unox and Lainox are solid combi ovens. But for the market in the Netherlands and adjacent regions, Rational is the standard – for four concrete reasons. And anyone genuinely looking to buy at a low price often overlooks the smartest route: a used Rational.

Summary

On paper, competitors look decent. In practice, Rational wins on automation, consistency, service network and service life. If you are only looking at purchase price, a used Rational is a better bet than a new Convotherm or Unox – usually cheaper and economically more advantageous.

Why Rational wins

  • Automation (iCookingSuite)

The oven adjusts cycle, temperature and time independently to the load. Less expertise required, more consistent results. Competitors are catching up, but Rational remains the reference.

  • Consistency regardless of operator

With changing staff or during peak service, every dish achieves the same result. Critical for restaurants, hotels and catering operations with strict margin discipline.

  • Service network

Rational has the densest service network. Parts and technicians arrive faster than with competitors – less downtime, less lost revenue.

  • Service life and maintenance costs

Rational typically lasts 12–15 years with proper maintenance. Annual maintenance costs are comparable to or lower than competitors, as original parts are available faster.

The smartest route

Used Rational: often cheaper than a new competitor unit

The comparison few people make: new Convotherm or Unox versus a used Rational. In practice, the used Rational (from year of manufacture 2018–2019) is often equally priced or cheaper, while fully retaining the Rational platform – so better cooking results, lower running costs and a stronger service network.

For new businesses, butchers, small restaurants and seasonal operations: generally the smartest choice. No investment subsidy, but a lower entry hurdle and better kitchen economics over five years.

What the competitors do well

Convotherm (Welbilt Group) is robust and easy to operate – strong in industrial applications and with stable staffing.

Unox (especially ChefTop MIND.Maps) is compact and suitable for smaller kitchens with a fixed menu. Lower price, more limited automation.

Lainox is a solid Italian manufacturer, strong in patisserie and specialised preparations.

All three are legitimate options in certain scenarios. But for most commercial kitchens in hospitality, care and staff catering, the Rational package wins – new or used.
