New vs used Rational:
which is the smart choice?

A refurbished Rational cooks identically to a new one and costs considerably less. Yet new is not always the expensive option. This guide puts the two side by side on the points that really matter: purchase price, lead time, service life and certainty.

In short

Choose a refurbished used unit when the lowest investment is decisive and you want to move fast. Choose new when you want the latest generation and the full manufacturer warranty. Not sure? We will work through both scenarios for your situation.

The short answer

A Rational is built to last. In normal hospitality use a unit runs for 10 to 15 years, and Rational keeps service parts available for at least 10 years. As a result, a refurbished unit usually has years of reliable service life left. That is what makes the used market for Rational so interesting: you buy the same cooking quality for a fraction of the new price.

Even so, new is not simply too expensive. The latest iCombi Pro has features an older unit lacks, and you get the full manufacturer warranty through the official dealer. The choice does not depend on cooking quality, but on your budget and how much certainty you want.

New or used: the differences at a glance

Apart from the cooking chamber, a refurbished Rational is almost identical to new. The differences are in the conditions around it.

We deliberately do not publish Rational prices online. In a tailored quote you see new and used side by side.

When a used Rational is the smart choice

  • The lowest investment matters most: start-ups, a second location or a temporary kitchen get the same cooking quality for much less money.
  • You need to act fast: with a failed unit, a refurbished machine from stock is often installed faster than a new one.
  • You do not need the newest features: if your team cooks with fixed programmes and standard dishes, the latest generation adds little in practice.

When new fits better

  • Maximum certainty: with a new unit you get the full manufacturer warranty through the official dealer and a machine with no history.
  • The latest generation matters: if you want the newest iCombi Pro features and software, new is the only route.
  • You are planning long term: with intensive use over 12 to 15 years, buying new gives you the full service life ahead.

What we see in the workshop

In our own workshop we refurbish iCombis every week. What we see time and again: the cooking chamber, the sensors and the cooking quality of a well-maintained Rational are still almost like new after ten years. The wear is predictable and sits in a few places, such as door gaskets, the steam generator and sometimes a sensor. We replace those before a used unit leaves us.

That is exactly why provenance is decisive. A Rational that has been fully inspected and tested is an excellent buy. A unit you pick up blind from an online marketplace, without refurbishment and without insight into the operating hours, is a gamble. The difference is not in the brand, but in who prepared the machine.

Frequently asked questions

Does a used Rational cook as well as a new one?

Yes. A well-refurbished Rational cooks identically to a new unit: the same cooking chamber, the same sensors, the same results. The difference is in the year of manufacture, software generation and warranty, not in cooking quality. We refurbish and test every used unit in our own workshop before it leaves us.

Why buy new at all if a used unit is so much cheaper?

Two reasons: the latest iCombi Pro has features an older unit does not have, and you get the full manufacturer warranty through the official dealer. For those who prioritise certainty and the newest generation, that often outweighs the price difference.

How long does a Rational last?

A well-maintained Rational lasts 10 to 15 years in normal hospitality use, often longer. Rational also guarantees 10 years of service-part availability. That is exactly why a refurbished used unit makes sense: there are usually years of service life left in it.

What should I check on a second-hand Rational?

Year of manufacture, operating hours, the condition of the steam generator and sensors, and above all whether the unit has been fully inspected and tested. Do not buy blind from an online marketplace. Our used-equipment guide and checklist explain what matters.
